So. Vallco master plan concept accepted

City Council meeting on May 20

City Council meeting on May 20

At the City Council meeting on May 20, Kevin Dare, Sand Hill’s Project Manager for their new Downtown Cupertino on the 17.1 acres on Stevens Creek between Finch and Tantau, presented the Master Plan tying all the developments in the area together into one cohesive neighborhood. Mayor Dolly Sandoval thanked Council Member Mark Santoro for bringing the idea of mandating that Sand Hill, meet with all the principals whose property surrounds theirs. Sand Hill went above and beyond what was asked of them and held numerous meetings with residents. From the suggestions they gathered they came up with a good plan.

Included are walking paths through Rosebowl, Metropolitan, Wolfe Rd., Vallco Parkway and finding a way to bring Cupertino Square into the
mix. Expect matching lightposts and benches, a town square, water features throughout, a blending of plants and trees and public art and easy accessibility to Cupertino Square. This presentation was not the specific plan for Sand Hill’s building of Downtown Cupertino, that plan will be brought before Cupertino’s Planning Commission before too long. The ambitious undertaking by Sand Hill has a great deal riding on it. The acerage they are developing is the last large piece of undeveloped property in Cupertino and expectations are very high. When Downtown Cupertino is completed it will be our premiere neighborhood. If the West side presently holds the title of Heart of Cupertino, East Cupertino, with a stellar new downtown will have bragging rights of being its Soul.

The focus in Cupertino will change. Not only will Downtown Cupertino become a destination for Cupertino–it will also attract shoppers from surrounding city’s as well as tourists to San Jose. Unlike other Downtown’s having to upgrade, update and find ways to attract folks, Cupertino’s Downtown will be painting on a brand new canvas. The public relations and publicity surrounding it will bring much attention. Sand Hill will receive far more oversight than anyone could anticipate. Besides that of our City Council, Planning Commission, Planning and Building Departments–all 52,000 of us in Cupertino are invested in our Downtown being what we expect it to be. So, Sand Hill, you are forewarned: You may hold title to the ground, and you may be doing the building but this is “Our Place” so please do not disappoint. We told you what we envision–go forth and make us happy. (-editor)
