MAYOR DOLLY’S RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM

Pose3_2
By forming her own team in the
Cupertino 2nd Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life, our own Mayor Dolly
Sandoval is a "second generation" trend setter. Last year, then Mayor Kris Wang
started a Cupertino tradition of having a Mayor’s Team in the Relay. Mayor
Dolly’s Team added the advantage of being the "official" City of Cupertino
entry in this year’s Relay. Understanding that 1 in every 3 people is diagnosed with
cancer, Mayor Dolly has shown support for Cupertino’s Relay For Life since she
took the helm of the city last winter.

By having her own team, Mayor
Dolly has become a leader in the fight against cancer. It’s rare that the Mayor
of a city holding an RFL does anything besides giving the obligatory greeting at
the opening ceremony. Since Sandoval has the reputation of being Cupertino’s
"First Athlete" having her own team and inviting all Cupertino
residents who want to walk with her to join her team is a fitting
gesture.
   Just after Cupertino’s Relay
For Life Begins on June 19, 2008 at 10:00 am, Mayor Dolly Sandoval, along with
other city officials will greet the crowd, the lap for Cancer Survivors ( those
who are in remission, or surviving cancer day by day) will take the track, in
their purple Survivor t-shirts, for the first lap of the Relay. The rest of the
many Teams in the Relay, to rousing music, and led by Mayor Dolly’s Team will
take the track as their team names are announced. It’s a very festive but moving
opening to the 24 hour Relay For Life. At least one member of each team must be
on the track, taking turns walking or running,  for whatever
commitment they have signed up to fulfil: some people walk one lap or 10
minutes, and some run or walk for hours and miles at a time. Some walk all night
long.
   Many former Cupertino Mayors
and City Officials are either members of teams, or will show up during the day
or evening to meet and greet those in the Relay. The very heart rending
Luminaria Ceremony honoring cancer survivors and mourning those who have died of
this insidious disease will take place at dusk. Luminaria’s can be purchased in
honor or in memory of cancer victims.
   Please join a team (www.events.cancer.org/rflcupertinoca)
donate to a team or a team member, volunteer to help the day of the event
(408/688-7550) or show up that day to cheer on the participants. There will be a
Silent Auction, Sales of drinks, cookies, handmade jewelry, music, games, etc.).
Be a part of this life altering event. This is the time to make a difference in
the fight against cancer, a disease that strikes young and old–children
and grandparents–friends and family, take a stand.. We Will Never Cross
The Finish Line Until There Is A Cure For
Cancer.
