SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES BY THE USNS MERCY

When the Captain and Crew of
the USNS Mercy sailed from the Port of Manilla in the Philippines, on their
continuing Humanitarian MIssion,  two things were apparent to me: They had
already completed hundreds of needed surgeries on underprivileged people
who desperately needed them, the crew had treated many many grateful folks who
needed the care for a variety of illnesses that would have gone unchecked if The
Mercy hadn’t put into their Port; and scores of adults and children would not
have had received greatly needed Dental care.

The second thing apparent to
me, was that our Grandson Mike Nilmeier from Pacific Grove, a
Pre-Med student in San Diego was part
of the Volunteer Medical and Dental Group on board The Mercy this summer.
Instead of surfing, hitting the clubs and kicking back–Mike boarded a plane at
SFO for the 24 hour flight to Manilla to begin his astounding adventure. When I
pulled up the Captain’s Blog this morning to check on what feats of medical
magic this wonderful crew had worked on yesterday, I was thrilled so
see our Mikey taking someone’s pulse–in a room full of patients.
   The USNS Mercy circles the
Pacific visiting many islands along the way,  to treat thousands of
patients who need their help and tender care. We hear about the war. No one is
FOR war. We are all against war. Why is it that whenever we see anything in
print about our military, it’s always about war and never about their practicing
PEACE in such a basic and meaningful way?
    The Captain and
the crew of the USNS Mercy is waging PEACE throughout the Pacific on behalf of
every single person in the United States of America. A huge thank you
to Capt. Bob–the entire crew and all the wonderful volunteers (including
Mikey) aboard the USNS Mercy who bring hope and tender loving care to people who
are in desperate need. WE LOVE YOU!!!!
