Proposed new hotel at oaks on aug. 5 council agenda

As folks who visit The Oaks Shopping Center at Steven’s Creek at the 85 know, this is a busy
jam-packed with cars very popular place. Although some seem to feel its outdated and no longer viable, I for one protest the notion. Just because a shopping center is still standing, still busy and still attracts crowds doesn’t mean it’s not loved for what it is.

Sure, it’s not a sleek modern stainless steel looking place, nor is it a Pepto Pink overused Mediterranean-Ugly look alike too far from the sea to really be the genuine article. It is however the venerable low-slung wood sided shopping center style good enough for Palo Alto and Los Altos and certainly appropriate for Cupertino.
I, for one, can’t believe my eyes and ears when I read and hear people discuss the fallacy that The Oaks is no longer viable. To that I say Balderdash. Anyone who frequents this place can attest that Hobbees is always hopping, Jamba Juice is Jumpin’ and Coffee Society is perkin’. The 24 Hour Fitness is very popular and the Dance Studio in back caters to many students. I dare anyone to not smile at the little girls in tutu’s– each with a Mom or Dad in tow, and each in their own car. The other eateries are also popular which proves that if you give people what they want at a fair price they will flock to your shopping center.

So why, oh why do we want to spoil a good thing by plopping down a waaaay too large for the area as proposed at the last meeting to root in this center? And, it’s not just a hotel, the units are studios, one and two bedroom with full kitchens. Wow, with kitchens included expect little business for the restaurants in The Oaks. To quote those who stayed up until 1:00 a.m. at the last meeting, “Too Dense, Too Big, Too Intrusive” (or words to that affect) for this center. How Say You? With all that’s going on there, do we really want a hotel roughly the size of The Cupertino Inn taking up a ton of room in this center? And, not just that, also proposed is an office-condo, etc.? Bye-bye, parking. Even though the hotel is proposed to have underground parking, it’s only for the use of hotel guests. So, they get theirs and yours, too?

No matter how you feel about this project, make your wishes known at the next City Council meeting–Tues. Aug. 5, 2008. Yay or Nay–this is your chance to practice democracy. This is projected to be the first item on the Council agenda, the meeting begins at 6:45, (editor)
