NEW MAIN STREET CUPERTINO

By Raj Abhyanker

The Cupertino Daily had a chance to
speak with Peter Pau and Kevin Dare (property owners & builders)
about the new proposed Downtown Cupertino this week. The new Downtown Cupertino is going to be off Stevens Creek road, next to the Cupertino Square shopping center.  The project will take two years to complete and construction will probably start sometime in the Summer of 2009. If
all goes well, portions of the project will open before others, and we
may be able to take our first stroll in the new mainstreet Cupertino
during the Spring of 2011.

While no tenants have yet been secured, the project hopes to revitalize the city and bring a downtown-like feel to Cupertino.  Peter
Pau and Kevin Dare told the Cupertino Daily that the new Main Street
Cupertino will feature buildings that each look different, and while
unique, "kind of like downtown Walnut Creek but smaller." The new downtown will feature a small park in its center, about the same size as the park in the Los Gatos downtown. Since
the largest tenants will be 30,000 sq. ft. in size, there will not be a
warehouse club like Costco in the new downtown area (e.g., typically
more than 100,000 sq. ft.). Rather, there will mostly be mixed retail with perhaps a small grocery store.
The walking paths will be extra wide, and Cupertino will finally have a town center!
