Memorial

In a very moving ceremony, a memorial was dedicated to the Fire Fighters who died at Ground Zero during  the  9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.  The Memorial plaque is attached to a two ton boulder,  and  has one Redwood Tree, the tallest  on earth, on each side of the boulder, standing guard. They stand like the Twin Towers that were destroyed. . The Memorial  is on the side lawn of our Cupertino Fire Station at Stevens Creek at the corner of Vista.

Mayor Dolly Sandoval opened the ceremony by recounting the horror that struck on tbat  fateful fall day,  as  we all watched in disbelief.  This unbelievable  scene played out on our t.v. screens over and over for days on end following the  9/11/2001 attack.
As members of our City Council, City Manager, Dave Knapp, Cupertino Information Officer, Rick Kitson, and Sheriff Terry Calderon looked on–Mayor Dolly paid homage to all the Fire Fighters who perished on 9/11, and to the legions of Fire Fighters who protect us, every minute of every day.  We could not help but feel the great loss for the 343 Fire Fighters who selflessly lost their lives on that horrific day, and take pride in those who continue to keep us safe.
Just as three clangs of a Firehouse bell marks the beginning as well as the end of a Fire Fighter’s shift, the sound of three bells to replicate the start of the  9/11/2001 morning shift was clanged, followed by another three bells to signify the end of their time on duty–and on earth rang out to end the program.
It was good to see so many people in attendance at the dedication of the Memorial to the hero’s of 9/11, and to let our   Fire Fighters know that we share their pain. Among those lending support were Former Mayor Sandy James, Vicki Yang from WVCS, Chamber Pres. Bob Adams and Chamber CEO, Suzy Blackman.
For me, the ceremony was also a fitting remembrance of our Cousin, Joshua Rosenthal–who died that awful day at the World Trade Center along with the other 2,973 victims of this cowardly act of terrorism.
Please take time to visit the Cupertino Firefighter’s Memorial, to honor the victims, and to show support for our own heroes. Take a moment to let them know how much we appreciate what they do for us, and how we will never forget the sacrifice of their brothers of the NYFD who rushed in, selflessly to help, and gave their all.
