The brand new Trader Joe’s on DeAnza opened on 9/19/2008, to a crowd of folks anxious to shop in their own neighborhood store. Charley Gallman, The store’s Captain welcomed shoppers to the newest Trader Joe’s with his usual smile and friendly greeting.

Team members from Trader Joe’s stores in other city’s were on hand to help the launch, and to assist shoppers to find groceries and samples of food. There were balloons, galore for kids in attendance, and shopping bags boasting that they had been plastic bottles in a previous life were given out as gifts.

One outstanding feature of the new store is a mural depicting agricultural life in Cupertino as it had been decades ago. The mural was copied from the photo collection of The
Cupertino Historical Society. Cupertino Activist, Donna Austin, a member of the Historical Society Board and a columnist for this publication helped Trader Joe’s bring the mural to fruition, in their effort to be part of the community.
