New mayor takes office dec. 2nd come out and wish him good luck

If all goes as expected, Council member Orrin Mahoney will be elevated to Mayor Orrin Mahoney by his peers on the Cupertino City Council at their Dec. 2, 2008 meeting. The position of mayor in Cupertino is ceremonial, and rotational.

Although the other five council members must
vote on who will become mayor and vice-mayor each year, they follow a formula a tad difficult to fathom. The order of ascension has to do
with the number of votes garnered by each member of the council when they were elected.

And, while tradition holds forth on whose turn it is to become mayor, it is not mandatory. The city council is not forced to follow the rule of
thumb, it’s much more of a tradition than a law.

Since each member of the council usually takes a turn at being mayor, it’s not as prestigious as it would be if the mayor was elected to the office by
the community.

Nevertheless, it is an honor to be mayor, and is a thank you, of sorts, for giving the huge amount of time it takes to be on the city council. It is sometimes a thankless job. Especially when the council
votes against the city staff in order to do the best for the residents of the city; and when they have to vote against groups of residents in
order to protect the interests of the entire city.

Sometimes the fine line they tred seemingly goes in favor of none of the above. The Mayor
of Cupertino takes the compliments and the complaints, and must be ubiquitous throughout the city.

The City Council meeting of Dec. 2nd is also a good time to come out and thank outgoing Mayor Dolly Sandoval for her service. Whether you agree or disagree with her policies, she has given hundreds of
hours during 2008 on behalf of Cupertino.

On behalf of The Cupertino Daily, thank you Mayor Dolly Sandoval for your time, your participation
and your energy. - editor
