Today I visited three wonderful
places in the Cupertino area that reminds me of the past while celebrating the
present day modern way of life.
Yamagami's Starbucks Trader Joes
First stop was Yamagami's Nursery
commemorating 60 years of service in our community. Since 1948, Yamagami’s
nursery has supplied the area with plants, products and professional support. I
loved the banners they had representing each decade and what it was like for
the Nursery and the surrounding area. I particularly liked the 50’s banner than
showed the surrounding orchards and another picture showing San Jose crossed
out and Cupertino written on our city limits sign.
Second stop, Trader Joe's Cupertino
Store in San Jose, on De Anza and Bolinger. The shiny new modern exterior of
the store was a contrast to the mural that wrapped around the interior of the
store depicting Cupertino in the old days. I loved the Cupertino Store with the
Trader Joe’s sign, the Cupertino Delivery truck, Cali Mill, Pichetti Winery,
the vineyards and the Stelling brothers on their bikes. They also had framed
pictures of the real thing. The cashier’s stations each had a local street name marker.
Last stop was the landmark former Bonsai Nursery - closed and vacant
since 1998. The Bonsai Nursery, family-owned and run for 45 years closed its
doors in 1998 and had stood vacant for what seemed forever. The lot finally
started going through some transformation last year. Now there is a Starbucks
Coffee opening in the salvaged building and they’ve done a great job of
blending the old with the new.
Today’s visits show me that people
can build on the past while providing new refreshing experiences in the
present. I came away feeling so glad to be part of this community. You can show
your appreciation by visiting and shopping in these wonderful establishments.
